How large is four-up on an A4 sheet?

Connecting to the processing service

Four-up is a good index for a slide deck or meeting pack. It is a bad choice for the only copy of a contract. On A4, an 11 pt line from an A4 page comes out at about 5.19 pt in the engine’s four-cell grid.

For a page-sized shipping label, see the A4 label-size calculations before choosing a denser layout.

What fits in each quarter of A4?

A4 is 210 × 297 mm. PdfNUp reserves 5 mm at the outside and 2 mm between cells, leaving a 99 × 142.5 mm rectangle in each quarter. A portrait A4 source page fits that cell at 47.14%; 11 pt becomes 5.19 pt and a 9 pt footnote becomes 4.24 pt.

Print one sheet before deciding.

A vector outline stays smooth when enlarged on screen. The letter on paper is still only 5.19 pt tall. For the A4 scale check, the example at vector scaling detail for type size, which covers why sharp vector edges do not restore print size.

Would you give a contract printed at that size to someone for approval?

The grid varies with the source page. PdfNUp chooses the sheet orientation and cells to fit the imported pages. Wide slides, landscape tables and mixed page proportions affect the scale. The service uses the CropBox and respects page rotation. The A4 output is portrait or landscape, never Letter.

Where four-up earns its space

Use four-up for the sequence: a meeting pack, slides with short labels, course handouts or the opening of a report. The reader sees where one section ends and the next begins, then opens the relevant page in the source PDF.

Four-up suits pages with large type and open layouts. A slide with one heading and a clear image survives reduction better than one crowded with a chart legend, source note and small labels. A broad diagram with a short caption stays recognizable; a table packed with figures does not. Page count alone tells you nothing about that difference.

For a course, use four-up as a desk-side index. A student marks the worked example, then returns to the full-size notes for the algebra. PdfNUp adds no note columns or writing lines, so give learners a separate page if they need room to answer.

For a 48-page course pack, four-up creates 12 A4 output sheets. A student can mark the sheet that contains the worked example and keep the full PDF open for the derivation. If the class needs to annotate each step, choose two-up instead: the engine sets portrait A4 pages across a landscape sheet, with 142.5 × 200 mm cells and a 67.34% scale. The 11 pt body type then prints at 7.41 pt. That remains smaller than the source, but it gives a formula more room than the four-up cell.

The guide to choosing an N-up density works through the reader’s task before counting pages, a useful check when the handout needs annotation space.

Leave contracts and dense tables larger

Do not use four-up as the only version of a contract, invoice packet, bank statement, safety procedure or technical drawing that people need to inspect. At 5.19 pt, amounts, symbols, footnotes and unit labels are difficult to distinguish, especially after ordinary printer scaling. A reduced view locates the section. Approval, measurement and close review belong on the original-size page.

Dense presentation slides are another mismatch. A presenter follows the sequence from the thumbnails; the audience still needs readable quotations and data labels. The setting preserves page content and order; it does not extract speaker notes, enlarge a selected region or adapt a slide for print. Notes stored outside the slide pages are not added.

Preserving vector data does not solve accessibility. Screen readers, text extraction and searchable OCR have their own requirements. A PDF contains text, scanned images or a mixture. PdfNUp lays out imported pages; it does not create an OCR layer, improve contrast or prepare a large-print edition. If the reduced copy is hard to read, choose another format or keep the original available.

Follow the page sequence

The pages follow their source sequence across the grid: four per sheet takes pages 1–4, then 5–8, with any remainder on the last sheet. Check the generated PDF’s order and the printer preview to see how duplex settings pair the sides.

Printer software applies its own “four pages per sheet” setting at print time, alongside scaling, margins and duplex choices. PdfNUp creates a separate A4 PDF that you can preview or share before printing. The source remains unchanged.

If you are deciding mainly from a print estimate, the worked sheet-count examples compares 30-, 100- and 250-page examples and explains how to account for duplex printing separately.

Choose the page that will be hardest to read

Choose a page that represents the toughest reading case in your document: perhaps the smallest footnote, a dense legend or a multi-column table. Generate a four-up result and inspect it at normal screen size, then print one sheet if paper use is the decision at hand. Read the smallest required label at the distance the reader will use. If it takes effort or the paper will be dimly lit, try two-up or one page per sheet.

A mixed pack has no single ideal density. A slide overview and a detailed appendix need different treatment, while this service applies one pages-per-sheet value to the input. Keep a compact copy for navigation and the source PDF for exact reading. Do not use the overview as the record of every number.

Seven portrait A4 pages at four-up make two sheets; the second sheet has three pages and one empty cell. At six-up, the engine selects a landscape sheet with 94.33 × 99 mm cells; an 11 pt line scales to 3.67 pt. Keep six-up for locating pages, not reading a paragraph.

Nine-up is denser still. The portrait grid gives an A4 source page a 65.33 × 94.33 mm cell; proportional fit is 31.11%, taking 11 pt down to 3.42 pt. That sheet is a map for a presenter finding a slide number. It is not a handout for reading quotations.

PdfNUp accepts one PDF up to 25 MB, places a selected number of its pages on A4 output sheets and provides a downloadable PDF with an in-page preview. It refuses encrypted, damaged or print-restricted input. If four-up fits the way your document will be used, prepare a sample PDF and check the result before producing a larger print run.

Questions readers ask

What happens to an 11 pt font at four-up?

For a 210 × 297 mm portrait page, the 99 × 142.5 mm cell gives a 47.14% scale: 11 pt prints at about 5.19 pt.

Does the page order change?

Pages are grouped in source order. The layout does not sort or rearrange them, so check how your printer handles the resulting landscape or portrait A4 sheet.

Is four-up suitable for slides?

It can work for a presenter’s overview when slides use large labels. Dense slides and speaker notes usually need a larger layout or the original file.
